‘Impotent rapist’ gets jail sentence

A 29-year-old man convicted last month of raping and attempting to rape five elderly women was sentenced to an effective 30 years in jail by the Grahamstown High Court on Monday.

Mcebisi Noji, of Nkululeko Township, Barkly East, was sentenced 10 and eight years respectively on two counts of housebreaking with the intention to rape, and attempted rape.

Judge Elna Revelas sentenced Noji to 20 years and 18 years on two counts of housebreaking with intention to rape and rape, and a further 18 years for rape. The effective sentence comes to 30 years.

Revelas refused Noji leave to appeal the convictions and sentences, on the grounds that “no other court would come to a different conclusion than that of the trial court.”

Noji was convicted in February of breaking into the houses of two elderly women on June 3 and 17, 2006. In the first case he was convicted of attempted rape, and the second, rape.

Then, on October 17 of the same year, while out on bail of R1 500, he was convicted of raping two elderly women and the attempted rape of a third, in the space of two hours.

Hi youngest victim was 54 and the oldest 65.

Noji claimed he was not responsible for the rapes “because he had not had an erection since 2000, and suffered form an erectile dysfunction.”

However, Revelas rejected this defence after DNA analysis linked Noji to three of the victims, and the court accepted his identity by the other two victims.

Revelas said she accepted that the accused may suffer from some kind of sexual dysfunction, but it did not prevent him from committing the crimes.

“This may explain why he wanted to have sex with much older women, rather than those women of his own age.

“He is a sexual predator who was not deterred by the fact that he was out on bail, when he raped and attempted to rape the three women on October 17, in quick succession,” she said.

Noji was visibly angry on hearing his sentence and claimed he was innocent. – Sapa
