Breastfeeding baby triggers ‘trust’ hormone
Researchers at the University of Warwick have determined that babies who are breastfeed trigger a surge of a “trust” hormone in their mothers’ brains. They now understand, for the first time, how feeding a baby from mother’s breast causes a wave of the hormone oxytocin to be released. It is no secret that Oxytocin causes milk to be let down from the mammary glands and that it is also involved in the enhancement of trust and love in humans and animals. And that large, regular pulses of oxytocin are needed to create the wave released when a mother breastfeeds, strengthening the bond between mother and child. But, the Warwick neuroscientists working with other scientists across Europe have discovered that the thousands of neurons which are specialized to release oxytocin, are marshaled together to create the wave. When babies start suckling the neurons start releasing oxytocin from their dendrites (the branched part of the cell) as well as from their nerve endings.
This finding was quite a surprise because the dendrite is usually thought to be the part of a neuron which receives, rather than transmits information. The release of oxytocin from the dendrites allows a massive increase in communication between the neurons, co-coordinating a “swarm” of oxytocin factories which produce intense bursts of oxytocin, released at roughly five-minute intervals. The activation of the oxytocin-producing neurons is an example of an “emergent process”, scientists said, explaining it as a closely co-ordinated action developing without a single leader, in the same as a flock of birds or insects swarms.
The study is published tomorrow in the journal PLoS Computational Biology.
